Welcome to the Early Years

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage at Saint Nathaniel's Academy.

We are a big family in the Early Years ranging from 2-5 years old. We have our two year old provision Squirrel Lodge, Nursery and Reception.

In our Early Years setting we provide a vibrant and stimulating environment to engage children with their education. We strive to ensure that the children get the best possible start to their school life by providing a fun, safe, purposeful and engaging curriculum.

The Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is based on seven areas of learning consisting of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Expressive Arts and Design and Understanding the World.

All children learn across the seven areas of learning and they learn through their play with a combination of child initiated and teacher led learning opportunities both indoors and in our fantastic outdoor areas. Children are observed during play in order to assess their stage of development and in order to plan for their next steps and their future learning.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

Here at Saint Nathaniel’s Academy we have designed our EYFS curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the EYFS providing a safe, engaging, exciting and stimulating curriculum. Our curriculum ensures the progressive development of concepts, knowledge and skills and encourages the children to develop a love of learning that will equip them for today and tomorrow.

Implementation

The EYFS curriculum is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative and critical thinkers. A practical, playful approach to learning, based on the needs and interests of our children, is delivered mainly through topic based planning.

The “Characteristics of Effective Learning” are at the heart of the Early Years Curriculum and explore the different ways in which children learn. They highlight the importance of playing and learning, active learning and thinking critically. All the learning experiences we plan for the children allow them to utilise and develop these skills.

Impact

At Saint Nathaniel’s Academy, we aim for our pupils to become unique individuals who form positive relationships with both adults and peers. The Early Years Foundation Stage promotes teaching and learning to ensure children are ready for school and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life. We strive for our children to become independent, inquisitive learners who discover, take risks and ask meaningful questions.  We aim to ensure that our children are confident learners who are ready for the next stage in their learning journey.
